AS INDIA Inc looks hard to cut costs, travel is one of the main casualties, besides curbs in tech spends. However, new solutions like unified communications, which ensure seamless communication without travel or big investments in new technology, are much in demand in these tough times.
Unified communication (UC) enables multi-mode communication on a common platform that is e-mail, instant messaging, mobile phone, voicemail with IP telephony as the basic platform. Simply put, it's a single platform that helps corporates send data, talk, interact, share videos without any travel.
There are
various types of unified communication solutions from vendors like Microsoft, Cisco, Nortel, Tandberg, Avaya and Lifesize Communications. In fact, Microsoft will be showcasing UC at its Tech Ed India 2009 forum in Hyderabad.
Besides UC, the forum, which kicks off next week, in association with ET, will showcase and discuss other technologies like cloud computing, virtualisation and business intelligence.
"You need a desktop or a notebook, a good noise cancellation headset, which costs about $60, and a high definition web cam (about $160) to get going. We have deployed our solutions with many clients like Marico, Raymond, Tata Indicom, Biocon and Laxmi Vilas Bank," said UC Microsoft India director Amit Mehta. Microsoft India has cut travel expense by over 50% by using UC. Last fiscal, Raymond was able to save 86% of its travel bill by opting for UC.
UC is much cheaper than the traditional video conferencing or telepresence solutions, as it costs as low as $10 per month per user compared with a telepresence solution, which costs over $100,000. With its compelling cost saving proposition vendors have seen demand for UC grow despite the slowdown.
Tata Teleservices (TTSL) regional head-IT (south/west) IT Jiji Unnikrishnan said they have deployed over 50 such solutions in last two weeks. While HCL Infosystems, which is a certified partner for Microsoft and Cisco's UC solutions, has also seen significant demand for UC. Cutting travel costs is a paramount reason for implementing UC.
